Having the Mind of a Business Owner

Everyone has a mindset. Whether looking at the glass half-empty, or half-full. Having a cheerful disposition toward life, or being a “Debbie Downer”. As a working person, perhaps the best mindset you could have is that of a Business Owner.

Not everyone is a business owner, and not everyone has the mindset.

A Business Owner knows the following things: I have responsibility when I show up, I move people forward when I show up, and I make connections when I show up.

Responsibility

There are things that simply will not happen unless it is taken responsibility for. Not only that, it speaks to the following through of tasks. If I were to say; “I’m going to call 10 people today” my responsibility is to follow through on that task. The action will fail if I take no action.

Motivating

The biggest benefit any business has is a strong team. Strong teams are built with encouragement, challenge, and trust. People do their best when they feel like they are given value. My job as a person with a business owner’s mindset is to encourage those around me to reach their potential.

Connecting

My Dad (a business owner) used to say that every company’s job is to “create and keep customers”. Two ways of doing that are having integrity and humility. You could attract customers with flashy signs and discounts, but the best customers are the ones who keep coming back because of good service.

“The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office. “- Dwight D. Eisenhower
